We are currently looking for a Senior Director, Public Affairs to join our team in Ottawa or in Montreal.

The Senior Director is accountable for the development and execution of DFC’s public communications and federal government relations strategy.

The Senior Director will assess opportunities and risks in these areas, bring a strategic focus and discipline, and ensure alignment with the respective department and overall organization’s purpose and strategic plan to reach the optimum results.

The Senior Director provides strategic advice and recommendations in the areas of public communications and federal government relations to the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer and Vice Presidents.

If so, you will be happy to know that (once we go back to the office…!) we offer free cheese, yogurt and a variety of dairy products on a daily basis!Duties and ResponsibilitiesStrategicAccountable for the strategic planning process for the government relations and communications departments to support achievement of the organization’s overall purpose and strategic objectives.Accountable for and, by leading a small team of professionals, oversees the execution of the organization’s federal government relations and external communications strategies.Stakeholders to advance business goals.Ensure the organization has effective internal communications processes and protocols in place and are advanced by the respective Directors as required; Identify marketresearch intelligence needs and strategically assess trends and research to support the achievement of the organization’s strategic plans; Report on key performance measures related to the organization’s mission and overarching objectives.Lead the advocacy communications and government relations team to ensure that DFC acts proactively and reacts effectively to manage risk with respect to potential changes in regulatory and legislative areas that impact dairy farmers and the dairy industry at large, with external stakeholders, etc.ManagementProvide leadership, advice and expertise to the Executive Team for all aspects of Public Affairs, Communications and Government Relations; Lead the respective Directors responsible for the execution of advocacy communications and government relations., with an eye to supporting ongoing professional growth and development.Oversee systems and procedures necessary to the smooth operation of the communications and government relations function; Provide DFC’s Executive Team with insights on key strategic partners and develop and maintain key strategic alliances that support the advancement of DFC’s agenda; Identify emerging issues, opportunities and threats that may impact how DFC manages these in relation to internal and external processes and our member partners.Propose strategic alternatives for consideration; Stay informed of developments in the fields of public affairs, communications and government relations, stakeholder relationships and lobbying, in order to help the organization, operate with initiative and innovation; andHelp ensurethat the organizational philosophy, mission and vision regarding communications and government affairs best practices are pertinent.Professional Skills:Demonstrated experience and leadership in developing and managing comprehensive strategic public affairs, communications and government relations strategies to advance an organization’s mission and goals.A strategic thinker with a proven track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output; Excellent verbal and written communication, both written and spoken in French and English, with the acumen to communicate effectively with conviction, clarity and impact; Highly professional, with experience advising and presenting to senior executives and Boards of Directors as well as in media relations and presenting to senior decision makers and elected officials.Strong leadership skills with an ability to influence people and build consensus among all levels of the organization; Experience in building, mentoring and coaching a team of professionals; Ability to thrive under pressure and operate effectively in a fast-paced environment; Demonstrated change management skills; Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with all levels of the internal organization as well as with key external stakeholders; Excellent project management skills with an ability to synthesize data into clear actionable statements.Detail-oriented, organized and diligent in preparation; Strong facilitation skills with the ability to work with key stakeholders with differing needs to develop an agreed upon solution; Adaptable to change, able to navigate uncertainty and to work independently balanced with taking direction and guidance; Must be highly professional, have good judgment, proactively take initiative, able to multitask and demonstrate an ability to work well under pressure; Ability to prioritize and make necessary decisions aligned with leadership direction; Self-motivated,energetic, collaborative and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact strategic and tactical goals and objectives by empowering team in a learning environment; Job Requirements:Bachelor’s degree in communications, political science, or other related field; master’s degree is an asset.A minimum of ten plus (10+) years of experience in a public affairs, communications, government relations management role preferably with experience with or working with a national organization/association/not-for-profit.The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years managing teams with a proven track record of mentoring and successful growth and professional development at an individual and team level.A robust understanding of the workings of Parliament and strong knowledge of and experience working within the Canadian political system.Excellent track record for building positive and long-term relationships with key influencers, as well as networks.Bilingual (French and English)About Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC)Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) is the national policy, lobbying and promotional organization representing Canada’s farmers.
